“Something Lost” — Songs of Will T. Massey

Will T. Massey--Letters in the Wind CD coverWill returned to performing and recording music in 2005 after a prolonged period of isolation. He released a couple of stripped-down records before recording his first studio album in years, Letters in the Wind.

Meanwhile, a fan from Italy, Edward Abbiati, had invited Will to revisit the fan base he had built up when touring there years before, so Will headed overseas to promote the CD with a two-week tour.

This song was always a favorite of mine from that album  — the video comes from his performance in Frosinone, Italy, 2006.

Looking through the window,
On both sides of the pane,
My reflection shattered
By a baseball in the rain.
I’m throwing back to children
In a game where I could be,
Lights thrown across the floor
In pieces of memory.

Something lost, somewhere along the way.
I count the cost in dreams of yesterday.
Coming back for a place to stay,
Something lost, somewhere along the way.

Looking through the window,
On both sides of the pane,
My reflection newly,
The outsider in my brain.
Someone passing through us
I used to know and love,
In the streets convertible
Stoic nature to be heard.

Something lost, somewhere along the way.
I count the cost in dreams of yesterday.
Coming back, looking for their pay —
Something lost, somewhere along the way.

Destiny was a road bringing to
Slow dying, like things we didn’t do.
We’ve traveled so far away from who
We once were, we’re lone strangers anew.

We grew up together,
And toward the first of love,
The loss of all between us
Except the essence of
Youth’s possible splendor,
Dancing like moonlight (sunlight)
In evaporating puddles
Of rain and falling night.

Something lost, somewhere along the way.
I count the cost in dreams of yesterday.
Coming back, wonder which one’s stray?
Something lost, somewhere along the way.

Something lost, somewhere along the way.
I count the cost in dreams of yesterday.
Coming back, fighting for some say —
Something lost, somewhere along the way.
