It’s Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, so here’s a few songs for your weekend’s soundtrack. Mind you, my mom’s been gone over 14 years now, so this is a more of a playlist of mother-related rock & roll songs of my choosing, for my ears. These are not the songs Mom would have chosen, nor are they as familiar to younger mothers & children. But, hey, it’s my back porch, and I’ll play what I like. So, here, in no particular order, are some songs about mothers that I like:
The Beatles: Your Mother Should Know
The Beatles: Mother Nature’s Son
The Beatles: Lady Madonna
Rolling Stones: Mother’s Little Helper
3 Dog Night: Mama Told Me Not to Come
Merle Haggard: Mama Tried
Merle’s song as covered by the Grateful Dead
Pink Floyd: Mother
The Mothers of Invention (Frank Zappa): Motherly Love
Paul Simon: Mother & Child Reunion
The Band: Rag, Mama, Rag
If these selections seem a bit irreverent for your taste this Mother’s Day weekend, just be glad I didn’t make a list of Mother’s Day movies. Sure, if you reach back, you get the Irene Dunne Classic, I Remember Mama, but more recently, the titles tend towards less loving fare like Mommie Dearest, Throw Momma from the Train, and Big Bad Mama — not to mention the two horror movies simply titled Mother’s Day, one from 1980 and one from 2010.
Wouldn’t Mom be proud?
