“And the Winner is…” — 2019 APEX Awards

I am a finalist for the Talent Champion of the Year APEX Award from the Colorado Technology Association. As such, I will be attending their awards ceremony in Denver this evening. The Colorado Technology Association (CTA), now celebrating its 25th year promoting the state’s tech community, has hosted these awards since 2001.

APEX Awards 2019

“The APEX Awards recognize Colorado’s technology excellence, highlighting remarkable leaders and innovators.”

The APEX Awards recognize many other categories in addition to the Talent Champion of the Year, including Emerging Tech Company,  Entrepreneur, CEO, and Company of the Year.

I feel mildly embarrassed even being nominated for this award. Diana Armstrong of FEDC, the Fremont Economic Development Corporation, asked if she could nominate me for the Talent Champion award to represent our internship program partnering the high school with TechSTART. Our internship program is definitely a team effort, but the Talent Champion is an individual award. So, I was nominated and recently informed that I was one of 3 finalists for that award. But without the active support of FEDC, TechSTART, and Cañon City High School, there would be no internship program, so it feels a little “boast-y” to be considered a “talent champion” for helping out.  When I raised my concerns, I was told I was nominated for the award as a sort of figurehead, or mascot.

Yeah, that’s me, all right: team mascot.

Before we even find out  tonight’s result, I would to thank and recognize a number of individuals who help make up our team: Diana armstrong of FEDC, of course; Brad Rowland and Jason Veatch from TechSTART as well as Bob Wellot, my TechSTART partner in coordinating our interns. Our big partner, of course, is the high school, specifically Lisa Tedesco and her internship team, as well as Bill Summers, the principal. Finally, the most important people on the team: the students.

Additionally, we — in this instance, I — represent the entire Cañon City community and the intereest and support they show us every day.

Wish me luck this evening. I will update you on results later.
