Will was writing songs with the wisdom of experience from an early age. His music & lyrics would become more complex and insightful as he grew and matured, but the purity of his songs was there all along. This one, with its twice-repeated first verses was just an early example.
This comes from his debut album, Pickin’ Poker & Pick-up Trucks, self-produced and self-released while he was still in high school. I was delighted to see it re-released as a bonus track on the more recent compilation record, 30 Years in the Rear View, since that early cassette release is basically unavailable these days.
I like old trucks, old jeans,
An old pair of boots.
I like old movies, old friends —
Old drinks, too.
I like old churches, old dogs,
And the old music better than the new.
And, darling, I’d like to grow old with you.
I like Coca-Cola the way it used to be.
And I eat cornflakes and raisin bran.
I like driving through old towns
That have lasted through the ups and downs.
I like to see an old woman take an old man’s hand.
And I like old-fashioned love —
That’s what you got me dreaming of.
I like old trucks, old jeans, an old pair of boots.
I like old movies, old friends —
Old drinks, too.
I like old churches, old dogs,
And the old music better than the new.
And, darling, I’d like to grow old with you.
I like older women and older whiskey.
I smoke Lucky Strike cigarettes.
I like old pool halls and old cafes,
Memories of yesterday,
I like old stories about the old West.
And I like old-fashioned love —
That’s what you got me dreaming of.
I like old trucks, old jeans, an old pair of boots.
I like old movies, old friends —
Old drinks, too.
I like old churches, old dogs,
And the old music better than the new.
And, darling, I’d like to grow old with you.
Yes, darling, I’d love to grow old with you.
