This song comes from Will’s early days in Austin, one of 2 songs co-written with Mark Luke Daniels, another frequent performer at Chicago House. Will included this on his 1988 self-released cassette, Kickin’ Up Dust, along with the other co-write with Mark, “While You Waltz Across My Mind.”
Mark — now Dr. Mark Daniels, a long-time UT math professor — included his versions of the 2 songs on his 1989 CD, Shadow of a Doubt.
Like many of his early songs, Will dropped this from his performing repertoire as he constantly added new material and shifted musical styles.
You tried love on like a new pair of jeans,
And it was comfortable — it fit just right.
And you’ve worn it well through the years,
But it seems you wear a new dress every night —
I guess the old jeans are just too tight.
I’m fading away like my jeans,
Ripping apart at the seams.
I’m losing you
Like they’re losing their blue —
I’m fading away like my jeans.
The closet is full of memories,
The story of what we were.
And those old jeans still look good to me
But they’re lost in your fancy new world —
And I’m losing my country girl.
I’m fading away like my jeans,
Ripping apart at the seams.
I’m losing you
Like they’re losing their blue —
I’m fading away like my jeans.
I’m getting old and they’re getting holes,
I’m fading away like my jeans.
