Songs of Will T. Massey — “Broken Heart for You”

From a series of songs Will sent out to a few friends as he wrote them and recorded them on his iPhone. These were mostly written when he was living alone on the ranch outside of San Angelo in 2014-2015. He joked about releasing them on an album to be titled “iPhone.”

Some of the iPhone songs made it on to his album, “The Weathering,” released after his return to Austin.  This was one of several that wasn’t, and I don’t recall ever hearing him play it live.

Fort Stockton motel room,
The Chisos Mountains bloom,
The desert snakes and me on the ground,
A pocketknife and a song I’ve found.
I could never say I understand
The lines on the back of God’s hand,
But I’ve felt them hard across my face,
You know, there’s always a lot of ghosts in a place.

And it’s all right to be young again,
We’ll keep learning from where we’ve been.
I’m the lost hiker they could never find —
I’ll be a broken heart for you,
Me and my little boy mind.

I’ve been a Greyhound rider, long highways,
That dog’s an old friend — I’m here today.
Each road has brought me to your door,
I’ve gotten good at being poor.
If we get to kissing, you’ll forget
The dreams that ain’t come true yet.
We’ve got party favors from the earth,
Now what could the morning sun be worth?

But it’s all right to be young again,
We’ll keep learning from where we’ve been.
Changes in the weather, in the soul left behind —
I’ll be a broken heart for you,
Me and my little boy mind.

We’ll dance and sing and laugh and muse,
Making the most of the time we have to use
I’ll be the lightning, you’ll be the rain,
We’ll feel so good we’ll forget our pain.
I don’t mind pausing, like waiting on a girl,
For a better and better world,
Talk to me, Time, I’m still the same —
At least you and I remain.

It’s all right to be young again
We’ll keep learning from where we’ve been.
For a wink and a wish, I’ll give you my last dime —
I’ll be a broken heart for you,
Me and my little boy mind.

I enjoy reading the things you write.

I have many recordings from those live flips shows. I wish that Will could have focused enough to do something with them as I think there are some things in those shows and the recordings sound good enough. At least as good as the iPhone. 🙂

    • Thanks for the kind words, George, Glad you’re enjoying the posts about Will.
I do recall you recording a bunch of shows at Flipnotics back then and have wondered if anything could ever be done with them. I remember talk of a live album and he was in fine form about then. I would love to hear them at least. I’ll drop you a line via email later. I’m just posting these little pieces to try and keep his music alive and available. So many great songs, some rarely played, like this one. Don’t think I ever heard it live.

Nice song! We’ll keep learning from where we’ve been is a very good line! We can only hope!

    • Will always had a way w words, that’s for sure. A big part of why I keep posting the lyrics (when I can decipher them — some songs’ words elude my hearing them clearly despite having multiple live recordings) is to keep his music alive and make it more broadly available. Glad you enjoyed this one!
