Songs of Will T. Massey — “Last Lover’s Waltz”

Will T. Massey“I had written this thing on guitar a long time ago and I had written a song, came up with lyrics for the guitar, and it didn’t work out, so I tried it again several years later so…finally I landed some lyrics in there and I think if melodies have spirits, well, this one has a strong one. It wouldn’t quit, it kept coming back to me. So this is a waltz — it’s a brand-new song that was twenty years in the making.”
(from the unreleased Flipnotics recordings of George Fremin)

The town has assembled
For the Valentine’s dance,
Lovers are dancing in pairs
The fiddler hollers out,
“This one’s for couples
With futures to share!”

The crowd can see
I’m proud to be
Your faithful man,
In spite of my faults.
If you’ll faithfully stay with me,
Come take my hand,
It’s the last lover’s waltz.

You’ve loved before me,
And I’ve loved before you.
We’ll dance with others tonight.
But this dance for promises
No one can cut in —
Faith will keep our feet light.

The crowd can see
I’m proud to be
Your faithful man,
In spite of my faults.
If you’ll faithfully stay with me
Come take my hand,
It’s the last lover’s waltz.

There’s work left
When the day is done —
You face it confidently.
You need the man I’ll become,
I need the woman you’ll be.

You’re spinning
And turning your hand
But I won’t let you go.
And like the beat of the band
I will always follow.

The crowd can see
I’m proud to be
Your faithful man,
In spite of my faults.
If you’ll faithfully stay with me
Come take my hand,
It’s the last lover’s waltz.

It’s the last lover’s waltz.
