Songs of Will T. Massey — “Rainy Day Penny”

Will T. MasseyAnother tune from a limited-release CD that Will privately distributed to a few fans.

She was a blushing new bride
I was an old boyfriend.
Older, I tried to hide
The pain of what might have been.
As I watched them ride away
In a rented limousine,
I remembered youthful, rainy days
We spent saving on a dream.

She had something borrowed,
Something blue,
Something old and
Something new.

One approach of storm clouds
Our playground was disturbed.
Richer, I was proud
When I found by the curb
A wheat-stock penny, lucky and clean.
She saved it so some rainy day,
We could rent a limousine
And ride to the picture show.

She had something borrowed,
Something blue,
Something old and
Something new.

She borrowed mascara,
Her garter belt was blue,
The wedding dress was her grandmother’s
And her earrings were new.

Christmas cards had kept us in touch
Over years of sun and rain.
But the silence left us too much
To bridge over champagne.
So, we talked of the good old days,
We laughed away our tears,
And just before she rode away,
She whispered in my ear

That she had something borrowed,
Something blue,
Something old,
Something new —

And a rainy day penny in her shoe.
