5) “La Ti Da” Marcia Ball

Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, 1987
Austin’s own Cajun Queen of the Keyboards, Marcia Ball (our neighbor!), still plays regularly at the Dillo Xmas Bazaars, and has since the 80s — and I have caught several of her performances on video through the years. Here she sings one of her standards — just wish we could see her kicking that leg of hers like she always does!

4) “Highway One,” B.W. Stevenson

Capitol City Playhouse Street Dance, 1982
B.W. Stevenson soared out of the Texas onto the national scene in the early 70s, but few folks remember the man today, and that is a shame. Some of his songs remain alive through covers by others (“My Maria” by Brooks & Dunn), but “Buckwheat” left the stage due an early death in 1988. As far as I can tell, this may be the only video of him performing live. The audio buzz is an annoying artifact from an early outdoor shoot where I still mostly knew to point the camera and hope for the best.

3) “Falling, Flying,” the Resentments, featuring Stephen Bruton
(Jon Dee Graham and Joh Chipman regrettably absent)

Armadillo Christmas Bazaar 2008
This clip became all the more poignant after two events the following spring: Oscar nominations for “Weary Heart,” a movie Stephen wrote many songs for Jeff Bridges to perform; and his too-early death just 5 months after this recording. Between acclaim for the movie and its music, and Steven’s death, this little clip garnered some additional attention, and I am humbled to have been able to catch this. Again, I believe this is the only video out there of Stephen singing this particular song.

2) “London Homesick Blues,” Gary P. Nunn

Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, 1988
Long-time theme song for Austin City Limits, sometimes simply known as “I Wanna Go Home to the Armadillo.” How appropriate then, to catch Gary P. performing the song at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar!

1) “Jesus Loves Me, But He Can’t Stand You,” Austin Lounge Lizards

Armadillo Christmas Bazaar 2008
Oh, those Austin Lounge Lizards! While there’s only one Lizard clip in the top 5, other Lizard songs fill out most of the rest of the top ten. Yes, I’ve got a lot of Lizard tunes on my channel, dating back to a lethargic Sunday afternoon in 1986 at the Texas Showdown, “The Club That Ate Raul’s,” as Conrad called it. More about those other Lizard videos later…

So there’s the Top 5 Casa Dexter Videos — y’all have fun with ’em!
